New Release

A short documentary about a group of parents who created an organization in the North Bay area of California that has emerged as a leader in a powerful new approach to working with people with disabilities. Their pioneering work represents a massive shift toward a full community engagement model that will change the entire field of human services.

“Inspiration porn” is a term used to describe some people’s tendency to condescend to those with disabilities by saying they are brave or special - just for existing. While these simplistic attitudes may seem harmless, they can stem from society’s lower expectations of people with disabilities.   Fifty years ago a group of parents created Becoming independent in the North Bay area of California. It has emerged as a leader in a powerful new approach to working with people with disabilities. Programs like “sheltered workshops” deny all of us an opportunity to have an authentic human connection.   Becoming Independent's pioneering work represents a massive shift toward a full community engagement model that will change the entire field of human services.
